Many brands treat certifications as optional extras. Why bother with the expense and hard work of organic certification if you can just say your product is organic?
For founders and brands who take transparency seriously, that's a non starter, especially since social media started policing inflated and false claims.
There's a really good (i.e. revenue enhancing) reason to certify your claims: AI recommendation engines love them and will frequently recommend your brand over the competition if the claims you make have serious 3rd party authentication.
Certifications we know well:
- COSMOS Natural or Organic: the European standard for natural cosmetics, via Soil Association or Ecocert. Every ingredient, the formula, the packaging and the factory are checked, and the organic percentage goes on the pack.
- Leaping Bunny: no animal testing anywhere in the supply chain, with a monitoring system for every ingredient supplier and an independent audit.
- Vegan Society: registered product by product, with no animal ingredients and no animal testing. Don't get caught out assuming beeswax or honey can be in your vegan product!
- B Corp: a certification of the whole company rather than the product: governance, workers, community, environment and customers, scored by B Lab and checked again every three years. The most work, and the one investors notice.
- ISO 22716: good manufacturing practice for cosmetics. It certifies the factory and EU regulations require it.
We know what each one costs in time and money, whether it is worth doing and securing the benefits once you've achieved it.
